Project: New into Old: A Cinderella Approach. Urban Anchor, Art-House in. Daegu, Korea.

An “urban anchor” — buildings whose presence and impact on the neighborhood contribute to the urban renewal of an entire district while strengthening both the structural and social fabric of the community. The design, selected as 1st prize out of 73 international entries in an open competition, forms a key part of the Chang-dong urban regeneration initiative

Project: World of Volvo

World of Volvo is designed around the Swedish concept of ‘Allemansrätten’, denoting a fundamental right to experience the outdoors and roam freely on any land (public or private) while showing consideration for nature and for others. This tenet is not just a right, but a central part of the Swedish ethos and one that lives in people, businesses, and organizations – Volvo included. The main structure, made of glulam and cross-laminated timber, forms three striking tree-trunk-like columns arranged in a mathematical pattern. Fanning out to carry the entire load of the roof, these envelope visitors in a welcoming forest-like canopy. The expansive round structure encourages visitors to create their own journeys both indoors and outdoors, regardless of whether they hold tickets to the exhibitions inside.

Xavier De Kestelier, Principal, Head of Design, Hassell Australia

Project: University of Glasgow Adam Smith Business School

Designed by Hassell, the major £86-million development of the University of Glasgow’s brand-new, six-storey building has successfully been granted official planning permission. This significant milestone marks a major step forward for the historic institution. The striking new building will provide 11,600 square metres of specialised teaching and research space dedicated specifically to the University’s expanding Postgraduate Taught (PGT) student community. Simultaneously, it will deliver state-of-the-art, future-focused premises for the University’s world-leading Adam Smith Business School. Crucially, it stands as the fourth major new building delivered within the University’s ambitious £1 billion Campus Development Programme, and it is the very first facility in this extensive masterplan to be entirely purpose-designed for PGT students
